KGM USAK-AFYON OVERPASS BRIDGE & APPROACH EMBANKMENTS PROJECT
The stability of the stone wall filling was provided and the settlements beyond tolerable limits were eliminated by the Geopier Impact® ground improvement solution for this project. In addition to this, the consolidation settlements were dramatically completed during the filling of the stone wall construction by using Impact® soil reinforcing elements acting as vertical drains by allowing the radial drainage.
The new structure consists of two stone walls of 9m in height resulting in a bearing pressure by weight of 180 kPa. The new structure is supporting a bridge structure connecting both stone walls. The design load of the bridge was 52,000 kN.
The soil profile mainly consists of 2.7m of medium stiff sandy, silty clay underlain by soft to stiff sandy, silty clay to the depth of 15.5m over by loose to medium dense clayey, silty sand layer. Groundwater has been encountered at the ground surface.
A total of 33,444 meters Geopier Impact® soil reinforcement elements installed in a square grid spacing at 1m to 1.7m on-center. The Impact® design consisted of five different sections with elements of varying shaft lengths of 8m to 16m, corresponding to changes in fill height along the length of the embankment. Total and differential settlements were substantially reduced in accordance with stringent project criteria.
